Pennsylvania to Florida Auto Transport
Pennsylvania to Florida is one of the busiest auto transport lanes in the country, and it is seasonal in a way almost no other route is. Every October, trailers leaving Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh fill with cars belonging to people who will winter in Naples, Sarasota, Vero Beach or The Villages. Every April, the same trailers run the other way. That rhythm, more than mileage, is what sets your price.
The figure for this lane is 1,050 miles, with typical transit of 3 to 5 days and open transport between $650 and $950. Treat 1,050 miles as a state-to-state average, not your actual haul: Florida is nearly 800 miles long, and Philadelphia to Jacksonville is a far shorter run than Pittsburgh to Miami. Your quote reflects that.
What a PA to FL car shipment actually costs
Most standard sedans moving Pennsylvania (PA) to Florida (FL) on an open carrier land mid-band, between $650 and $950. You trend low with a compact or midsize car, a running vehicle, flexible dates and metro addresses on both ends. Five things push you to the top of the range or past it:
- Size and weight. A three-row SUV or full-size pickup takes more deck space and more of the trailer's weight allowance than a Civic-sized car.
- Non-running condition. A vehicle that will not start, steer or brake needs a winch and a carrier equipped for it β a firm surcharge you must disclose at booking, or the driver can refuse the load.
- Enclosed instead of open. Enclosed trailers carry fewer cars, so each slot costs more.
- Season. Southbound in late fall is the single biggest price variable on this route.
- Distance off the corridor. A pickup in Bradford County or a delivery in Everglades City pulls the driver far off the interstate he is paid to run. Rural addresses add cost and often a day.
Rates move week to week with carrier supply, which is why a range is honest where a single number is not. A quote prices your exact vehicle, ZIP codes and dates against what carriers are accepting now.
Two Pennsylvanias, two different roads south
This is where the PA to FL lane differs from most state pairs. Pennsylvania is split by the Alleghenies, and carriers on the eastern and western halves of the state take genuinely different routes to Florida.
From eastern Pennsylvania, it is the I-95 run. Out of Philadelphia and its Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester county suburbs, carriers take I-95 south through Wilmington, Baltimore's Fort McHenry Tunnel, the Capital Beltway, Richmond, and on through the Carolinas and Georgia to Jacksonville. Trucks from the Lehigh Valley, Reading and the Poconos feed that same corridor via I-476 and I-78; Harrisburg, York and Lancaster shipments usually drop down I-83 to Baltimore and join there. This is the densest car-hauling corridor in the eastern United States, so a Philadelphia pickup rarely waits long. The tradeoff is traffic: the stretch between Baltimore and Fredericksburg, Virginia is a chronic delay zone.
From western Pennsylvania, it is I-79 and I-77. Out of Pittsburgh and Erie, carriers do not detour east. They run I-79 south through Morgantown to Charleston, West Virginia, pick up I-77, and follow it into Virginia and North Carolina β through the Big Walker Mountain and East River Mountain tunnels, then over Fancy Gap Mountain at the Virginia-North Carolina line, a grade with a winter reputation for dense fog and sudden ice. From Columbia, South Carolina, drivers take I-26 southeast to meet I-95.
Central Pennsylvania sits between the two. State College, Altoona, Williamsport and the northern tier are genuinely off-corridor, and a truck has to come get you, usually routing out via I-81 to I-77 at Wytheville, Virginia. Budget an extra day there β a wider pickup window is the cheapest concession you can make on this route.
Where in Florida you are going matters more than you think
Once a carrier crosses the state line at Jacksonville, Florida splits into four very different delivery problems:
- The Atlantic coast (I-95). St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Vero Beach, Stuart, West Palm Beach, Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami sit on or near I-95 β easiest and fastest, since the truck never leaves its corridor.
- Central Florida (I-4). Deltona, Sanford, Longwood, Orlando, Lakeland and Tampa string along I-4 between Daytona and the Gulf β high volume, quick to schedule.
- The Gulf coast (I-75 and the Turnpike). Ocala, Wildwood, The Villages, Lady Lake, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples β heavy snowbird country, with excellent availability October through December and thinner slots in July.
- The Panhandle (I-10). Tallahassee, Panama City and Pensacola are a different trip entirely. Pensacola sits roughly 350 miles west of Jacksonville, and a truck running the I-95 corridor passes nowhere near it. Expect Panhandle quotes above the standard band and a longer window.

The snowbird calendar, and how to use it
Prices are set by the balance between cars needing to move and trailer slots heading that way. On this route, that balance swings hard twice a year.
October through December is peak southbound. Demand out of Pennsylvania spikes, trucks run south full and north empty, and carriers price accordingly. Book two to three weeks ahead in this window. March through May reverses it: northbound is expensive, and southbound PA to FL gets unusually cheap because carriers need cars to fill the return leg. If your dates are flexible, spring is the bargain window on this lane.
June through November is Atlantic hurricane season. A storm approaching the peninsula rarely cancels shipments, but it reshuffles them: carriers stop entering evacuation zones, yards close, and a two-day delay becomes five. Shipping in September or October means building in slack. If you are heading south for the season on a fixed date, our seasonal snowbird transport service is built around these booking windows.
Open or enclosed on this corridor
Open transport is right for most vehicles here, and it is what the $650 to $950 range reflects. Two Florida-specific arguments push some owners to enclosed anyway. The first is love bug season: roughly May and September bring a heavy flight, and the remains are acidic enough to etch clearcoat if they bake on. The second is road exposure, since I-95 through the Carolinas is debris-heavy pavement.
For a daily driver, neither is worth the premium β wash the car on arrival and move on. For a collector car leaving a Hershey-area garage, or anything with original paint, fresh restoration work or low ground clearance, enclosed auto transport earns the difference. Enclosed demand here peaks in late winter and early spring around the Florida collector-car calendar, so book those slots early.
Before the truck arrives
Wash the car so existing chips show up on the inspection report, photograph all four corners, leave about a quarter tank of fuel, and clear out personal belongings. One item is specific to this corridor: remove your E-ZPass transponder or seal it in its shielded bag, so it is not read at gantries in Delaware, Maryland and Florida while the car rides on a truck. Snowbirds keeping Pennsylvania registration have nothing further to do. If you are relocating permanently, Florida gives new residents only a short window to title and register in-state, so arrange Florida insurance before the car lands.
How much does it cost to ship a car from PA to FL?
Open transport runs $650 to $950 for a standard vehicle. Smaller running cars with flexible dates and metro-to-metro addresses sit near $650; large SUVs and trucks, non-running vehicles, Panhandle deliveries and peak October-to-December bookings push toward and past $950. Enclosed prices above that range.
How long does Pennsylvania to Florida auto transport take?
Three to five days in transit once loaded, covering roughly 1,050 miles. Add pickup scheduling β usually one to three days after booking in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh metros, longer from rural counties. Panhandle deliveries and peak-season weeks run at the upper end.
Is it cheaper to ship a car to Florida in the spring?
Usually, yes. Carriers are hauling snowbird vehicles north from March through May and need cars to fill the southbound leg, so PA to FL rates soften while the reverse direction climbs. October through December is the opposite, and the most expensive time to go south.
Should I use the Auto Train instead?
Amtrak's Auto Train runs from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida, and it is worth comparing. The catch for Pennsylvanians is that you still drive to Lorton and again from Sanford, you must travel with the vehicle, and you buy passenger tickets on top of the car fare. If you are flying down, or the car is not drivable at either end, shipping is simpler.
Can you deliver to a gated community or condo in Florida?
Usually, but rarely at the door. A loaded car hauler is around 75 feet long, cannot turn around in a cul-de-sac or clear a parking garage entrance, and many Florida condo associations and gated communities prohibit them outright. The standard fix is meeting the driver at a nearby shopping center or wide side street. That is still door-to-door service, and the driver coordinates the spot with you before arrival.
