Two bookings that look identical can be a few hundred dollars apart. The reasons are almost always these:

• Vehicle size and weight. A Civic or a Corolla takes one slot on the trailer and books near the $700 end. A Suburban, a Ram 2500 or a long-wheelbase van consumes the height and weight budget of two smaller cars and prices at the top of the range. Roof boxes, lift kits and oversized tires all count against you.
• Running or not running. An inoperable car has to be winched on and off, which requires a carrier equipped for it and adds time at both ends. Say so when you request the quote: a non-runner discovered at the curb is the most common reason a driver has to leave a car behind.
• Open versus enclosed. The $700 to $1,100 figure is for an open carrier, the standard multi-car trailer you see on I-95 every day. Enclosed transport costs more and earns it on a classic, an exotic or anything with irreplaceable paint. Ask for both numbers on one quote.
• How far you sit off the corridor. Yonkers and Fort Lauderdale are both minutes from I-95, which is cheap for a carrier. Plattsburgh, the Southern Tier, Naples or Key Largo pull the truck well off its through-route, and the quote reflects the detour.
• The calendar. October through December is the heaviest southbound stretch of the year on this route, and rates follow demand. The same car quoted in late January often books for less.

Long Island pickups need a plan other New York pickups do not

Long Island is the one origin on this lane where the truck's route has to be worked out in advance. The parkways locals use every day, including the Northern State, the Southern State, the Meadowbrook and the Cross Island, are closed to commercial trucks and carry bridge clearances far too low for a loaded car hauler. A carrier coming into Nassau or Suffolk moves on the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and Sunrise Highway (NY 27), then leaves the island westbound via the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to the Verrazzano-Narrows and Goethals bridges into New Jersey, or north over the Throgs Neck or Whitestone bridge to the Cross Bronx Expressway and the George Washington Bridge.

The practical effect: if your street is narrow or sits inside a development with tight turns, the driver will ask to meet at a wide shopping-center lot near the LIE or Sunrise Highway. The run south, leg by leg

A hauler on the NY to FL lane is on I-95 for most of the trip. From the New York metro the truck picks up the New Jersey Turnpike, crosses the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and runs through Delaware and Maryland. Around Baltimore and Washington most drivers swing onto the I-695 and I-495 beltways rather than fight city traffic, then rejoin I-95 for Richmond, Petersburg, Fayetteville and Florence, followed by Savannah and the Georgia line into Jacksonville.

In winter some carriers leave I-95 between Washington and the Carolinas for I-81 down the Shenandoah Valley, then I-77 or I-85 through Charlotte to rejoin the coastal route. It is not a shortcut; it is a way around the northern Virginia stretch of I-95 that stalls at the first sign of ice. Federal hours-of-service rules put the driver down overnight either way, which is why 1,280 miles takes 4 to 6 days rather than the single day one driver in one car would need.

Where in Florida you are going decides the final day

Jacksonville is the fork in the road, and the branch your car takes changes the last leg:

1. The Atlantic coast. I-95 runs straight down through Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Port St. Lucie, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. This is the fastest and cheapest half of the state to deliver to, because the truck never leaves its own corridor.
2. Orlando and central Florida. Carriers break west on I-4 from Daytona, or come down Florida's Turnpike. A short deviation that rarely changes the quote.
3. Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples. These sit on the I-75 side of the state. A driver whose other cars are all bound for Miami has to make a real decision about your delivery, which is why Gulf Coast addresses sometimes price a little higher or wait a day for the right truck.
4. The Panhandle. Tallahassee, Panama City and Pensacola are reached on I-10 and are effectively a different lane, with a longer window than the 4 to 6 days quoted for peninsular Florida.

Season, weather and the spring reversal

Southbound demand builds from early October and peaks through December. Book two to three weeks ahead in that window; waiting until the week you want to travel in November means taking whatever capacity is left, at whatever it costs. January and February are calmer and cheaper southbound.

Then it flips. April and May are the northbound crush, and that reversal cuts both ways: trucks running south in spring have space to fill, which helps if you are moving to Florida rather than wintering there.
